2009 Season Gets Underway With Two Meets In Alaska

KINCAID PARK & ALYESKA, Alaska – The 2009 collegiate ski season will get underway Monday as the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves will host the first two meets of the season back to back between Jan. 5-11. The 2009 United States Cross Country Championships will also coincide with the UAA Invite.

Nordic races will take place at Kincaid Park while the Alpine events will be run at Alyeska. A detailed schedule of events:

  • Jan. 5 – Alaska Invitational – Nordic Freestyle
  • Jan. 7 – Alaska Invitational – Nordic Classical
  • Jan. 8 – Seawolf Invitational – Alpine Giant Slalom
  • Jan. 9 – Alaska Invitational – Alpine Giant Slalom
  • Jan. 10 – Seawolf Invitational – Nordic Classical
  • Jan. 10 – Seawolf Invitational – Alpine Slalom
  • Jan. 11 – Seawolf Invitational – Nordic Freestyle
  • Jan. 11 – Alaska Invitational – Alpine Slalom
Last season, Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association teams took 1-2-3 at the NCAA Championships with Denver winning its 19th title in school history, followed closely by Colorado and Utah. New Mexico finished seventh, Alaska Anchorage eighth and Nevada ninth giving the RMISA five of the top nine finishers.

Individually, RMISA athletes dominated the podium:

  • Men’s Slalom – Denver’s John Buchar won the individual championship with teammate Seppi Stiegler finishing second.
  • Women’s Slalom – Colorado’s Lucie Zikova finished a stellar slalom season by winning the individual championship.
  • Men’s Giant Slalom – Buchar swept the men’s competition by also winning the men’s giant slalom championship.
  • Women’s Giant Slalom – Colorado’s Lucie Zikova won the giant slalom championship with Utah’s Eva Huckova finishing second.
  • Men’s Freestyle – Colorado’s Jesper Ostensen was the RMISA’s top finisher in the men’s freestyle with a third place finish.
  • Women’s Freestyle – Colorado’s Maria Grevsgaard continued her dominance by taking the individual championship home for the women’s freestyle with teammate Lenka Palanova coming in just behind her in second place.
  • Men’s Classical – Colorado’s Kit Richmond was the RMISA’s top finisher with a second place finish in the men’s classical race.
  • Women’s Classical – Grevsgaard finished the season by winning her second championship and 11th individual title in 12 races on the season with the victory. The top three finishers were RMISA skiers with New Mexico’s Polina Ermoshina finishing second and the Pioneer’s Antje Maempel finishing third.
