Denver Holds Lead Through Six Races At NCAAs

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Denver held par here on day three of the 2010 NCAA Championships, and continues to lead the championship by 54.5 points over the field through six of eight races.

Denver finished fifth as a team and third as a team in the women to finish the day with 589.5 points over New Mexico, who vaulted into second with 535 points. Colorado is third with 504 points while Utah (472) and Vermont (423.5) round out the top five.

RMISA skiers continue to dominate the championships, finishing first and second on the men’s side and in the top seven spots on the women’s side.

In the men’s slalom on the famous Hawelsen Hill under the lights, Alaska-Anchorage’s Andreas Adde won the individual national championship in a two-run time of 1:14.91. Utah’s Torjus Krogdahl took the silver in 1:15.03 while Vermont’s David Donaldson took third in 1:15.30. New Mexico’s Petter Brenna took fourth in 1:15.67 while Dartmouth’s Ace Tarberry rounded out the top five and first-team All-American’s in a time of 1:15.81.

Men’s second team All-American’s were Middlebury’s Bobby Poehling, New Mexico’s Christopher Acosta, Bates’ Benjamin Manter and a pair of Colby skiers in Vincent Lebrun-Fortin and Joshua Kernan.

Utah won the race with 98 points, followed by New Mexico (94) and Vermont took third with 76 points.

On the women’s side, Malin Hemmingsson won the race in a time of 1:19.91 to earn an individual national championship. Denver’s Lindsay Cone (1:20.68) and Utah’s Anna Kocken (1:21.00) took podium appearances while New Mexico’s Anne Cecilie Brusletto (1:21.03) and Colorado’s Carolina Nordh (1:21.18) round out the top five and earn first-team All-America status.

Colorado also had a pair of second-team All-American’s with Erika Ghent and Katie Hartman finishing sixth and seventh just behind teammate Nordh. New Hampshire’s Veronique Archambault-Leger, New Mexico’s Kate Williams and Denver’s Ida Dillingoeen also earn second-team status.

New Mexico won the race, compiling 122 points while Colorado scored 111 and Denver 99.

The alpine portions of the championships are over with Denver winning the mythical national alpine championship with 408 points, over New Mexico (389) and Utah (368.5).

The 2010 championships conclude Saturday with the 15K women’s and 20K men’s freestyle races.
