Classic Races Postponed Until Wednesday

Tuesday, February 24, 2015 • by Curtis Snyder, RMISA

ANCHORAGE, Alaska—The classic races originally scheduled for Tuesday as part of Alaska Anchorage’s Seawolf Invitational have been postponed to Wednesday with a contingency plan in place for a potential move to Thursday if needed.

With a lot of rain in the area, lower than expected levels of snowfall this season and temperatures not reaching freezing for the last several days, the course at Kincaid Park simply had too many areas of standing water and not enough of a base to lay down a classic track.

The temperatures are expected to lower later in the week and less rain is in the forecast, leaving race administrators confident the races will be able to take place.

With the move, the races will also be shorter than originally scheduled, with the women running a 5K race and the men a 7.5K. The move also means that half the Seawolf Invitational will be scheduled for Wednesday as the alpine action also gets underway at Aleyska.

On the alpine side, a set of slalom races that were not to count toward the college racing season, were also postponed until Wednesday. The Seawolf Invitational was scheduled to run giant slalom races Wednesday, but organizers changed the schedule to slalom races in hopes of still pulling off two races, one as part of the Seawolf Invitational and one a non-collegiate FIS race.
